Don't Just Buy a Siemens PLC: How to Choose the Right One for Your Project

So you’re looking at a Siemens PLC. Good choice—they’re the industry standard for a reason. But when I started in automation procurement back in 2020, I made a classic rookie mistake: I assumed all industrial PLCs were basically the same box with different part numbers. Spoiler: they’re not.

There’s no single ‘best’ Siemens PLC. The right one depends entirely on your project’s scale, your team’s skill set, and—lets be honest—your budget. This guide breaks it down by three common scenarios so you can find the fit that won’t make you look bad six months down the line.

Why There’s No ‘One Size Fits All’ Answer

Here’s the thing: using an S7-1500 for a simple conveyor control is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut—way more power than you need, and a lot of wasted budget. On the flip side, trying to squeeze a complex, high-speed packaging line into a Logo! is a recipe for frustration. The key is matching the controller to the complexity of your task and your need for future expandability.

Scenario A: The New, Greenfield Project

You're building from scratch. Budget is allocated. You need a platform that will last 10+ years.

If I were in your shoes today, I'd go straight for the S7-1500 series. Yes, it costs more upfront—roughly $1,200 to $4,000+ for a CPU depending on performance. But before you balk at the price, consider this: the integrated motion control, advanced diagnostics, and safety integrated (F-CPUs) can save you a ton of money on separate components and wiring time.

In my 2023 vendor consolidation project, we switched a mid-size packaging line from a legacy S7-300 to an S7-1500. The initial hardware cost was about 15% higher, but we cut commissioning time in half because of the TIA Portal integration. The PLC‘s cycle time went from 10ms to under 1ms for the same program. For this scenario, the S7-1200 is often the way to go. It’s a serious upgrade from a basic controller but way more affordable than a full 1500. The G2 (second generation) versions have gotten super powerful.

Unless you really need a full-blown PLC for reliability, don’t scoff at the Siemens Logo! or the S7-1200 Starter Kit. The Logo! is a seriously underrated tool. It’s not a full PLC in the traditional sense, but for discrete logic and timing tasks, it’s a no-brainer.

In my first year, I made the classic spec error: I tried to use an S7-1200 for a simple skid control. It worked, but I was wasting a $600 processor and needing an HMI panel for configuration. A Logo! 8.3 (about $250) with its built-in display and keypad would have done the same job, with easier on-site adjustments by the operators. I learned that lesson the hard way—the project spent more on the controller than the project plan had allowed.

How to Decide: A Quick Mental Checklist

  1. IO Count: Under 20 I/O? Look at Logo!. 20-100 I/O? S7-1200 is your sweet spot. Over 100? You’re in S7-1500 territory.
  2. Network Complexity: Need ProfiNET with a dozen drives and an HMI? S7-1500 or high-end S7-1200. Not that complex? Any model works.
  3. Budget for Programming: TIA Portal Professional is expensive. If you ‘re on a shoestring, TIA Portal Basic works with the 1200 and is way cheaper. Just know you’re locked out of the 1500.
  4. Future Proofing: Plan to add motion control or safety in 2 years? The 1500 handles it cheaper than retrofitting a smaller platform.
