People expect me to have a clean answer by now. "Is a Siemens PLC good or not?"

I get asked some version of that question every few weeks. Clients searching in Spanish—ventajas desventajas PLC Siemens—usually want to justify the budget. Procurement wants to understand why the quote is higher than the alternative. Both are really asking the same thing: will this choice make our project better, or just cost more?

Every source they find is either a vendor brochure or someone venting on a forum. Neither helps. So here's my attempt at an honest answer, built from 11 years of specifying and commissioning Siemens PLCs, plus 14 documented mistakes totaling roughly $38,000 in wasted budget and rework.

The advantage and the trap are the same thing

The biggest advantage of Siemens isn't the PLC hardware. It's TIA Portal. And TIA Portal is also the reason most of my documented mistakes happened.

Everything lives in one environment: the S7-1200 and S7-1500 logic, HMI screens, drive parameters, network configuration. When it works, it's seamless. When it doesn't, it's a web of interdependencies where one wrong assumption ripples through an entire line. You don't just fix the PLC—you fix the project.

I learned that in 2019 on a packaging line commissioning. The S7-1500 was talking to a G120 drive over PROFINET, and I knew I should verify the device names matched the GSD files before downloading the station configuration. But I thought, "what are the odds the names are wrong? I set them up last week." Well, the odds caught up with me when the drive dropped off the network mid-commissioning. It wasn't wiring. It wasn't hardware. It was a one-character device name mismatch. IEC 62443-4-2 certified doesn't mean what buyers think

This one still catches people off guard, so let me be direct: Siemens markets the S7-1500 as IEC 62443-4-2 certified. According to Siemens (siemens.com), the S7-1500 is certified to IEC 62443-4-2, which is a meaningful technical milestone.

But the certification covers capabilities, not deployment. It means the hardware and firmware are capable of being configured to meet the standard's security requirements. It does not mean the PLC is secure when you pull it out of the box.

I watched a client fail a cybersecurity audit in 2023 because their integrator pointed at the "certified" label and called it compliance. The auditor's response: a certificate documents what the device can do, not how it's deployed. Default passwords, open ports, no access logging. All on them. The certification didn't protect the schedule or the reputations involved.

If IEC 62443-4-2 is on your requirement list, a Siemens S7-1500 is a defensible hardware choice. Just add the security configuration work to the budget. The certificate is the beginning of the conversation, not the closing argument.

The hardware price is the smallest cost you'll pay

But in my experience, hardware is 20-30% of total project cost. Maybe less. The rest is engineering time. The engineering software, integration testing, and commissioning time for a typical skid will dwarf that number within the first week.

What $38,000 of mistakes looks like

Since 2014, I've tracked every significant mistake I've made on Siemens projects. Fourteen of them. The pattern is almost always the same: a small unverified assumption multiplied by scale.

  • Firmware 2.4 vs. TIA V15.0: The CPU arrived with firmware 2.4, which required TIA Portal V15.1 or newer. The project file came from a colleague's machine in V15.0. "The PLC is always innocent." That's the rule taped inside our panel cabinet now. It started as a joke after mistake number four. It's not a joke anymore.

So when does Siemens actually make sense?

After reading this far, you might expect me to close with "avoid Siemens unless you have no choice." That would make a neat article, but it wouldn't be true.

I recommend Siemens PLCs when the ecosystem earns its keep:

  • Integrated multi-station systems—transfer lines, packaging systems, coordinated motion—where TIA Portal's single environment pays off repeatedly.
  • Industries with traceability requirements—food & beverage, pharma, automotive—where Siemens' data management capabilities shine.
  • Teams that already know TIA Portal. This is the cheat code. If your client's maintenance team is fluent in Siemens, every hour of support after startup gets cheaper.
  • Explicit IEC 62443-4-2 requirements. The S7-1500 gives you a defensible path to compliance, provided you budget for the security configuration.

And here's the part most articles won't say: if your project is a simple one-off machine with minimal networking, or the plant is standardized on a different PLC ecosystem, or your team has never opened TIA Portal and the deadline is tight—Siemens might not be the best fit. The integration advantage turns into a liability when you don't have time or existing knowledge to lean on. I can say that now because I've lived it: the first Siemens project for a team with zero TIA Portal experience will cost more in training and debugging than the hardware saves you.

Even last year, after choosing Siemens for a major line expansion, I kept second-guessing. What if the alternative platform would've been easier for the client's maintenance crew? The two months until the line ran reliably were stressful. But when the client's own electrician—who'd never touched TIA Portal—made a logic tweak after 40 minutes of phone support, I relaxed. That's when I knew the recommendation was right.

A quick pre-purchase checklist

  1. Does your team already know TIA Portal? If not, add two to four weeks of training lead time to the schedule.
  2. Is the plant standardized on another platform? Migration and mixed-fleet support costs will quietly erase any hardware price advantage.
  3. Is IEC 62443-4-2 compliance a real requirement? If yes, confirm scope with your auditor before assuming the certificate is sufficient.
  4. What firmware versions are you specifying? Put them in the purchase order. Check them on arrival, not during commissioning (I speak from experience).
  5. Is the application genuinely simple? A single pump sequence with no networking doesn't need an S7-1200. A Logo! or even a third-party nano-PLC might be the honest answer.

The honest bottom line

Siemens PLCs are excellent. The ecosystem is powerful. The certification is real. And none of that protects you from your own assumptions.
