This one's for the person who has to order a Siemens PLC but doesn't write PLC programs. I'm in that boat. I've managed purchasing for a 50-person industrial controls company since 2020, which means I handle 60–80 purchase orders a year. Most of my work is administrative, but after an expensive misstep in my first year, I became stubborn about checking part numbers.
Below is the checklist I use for every Siemens PLC order, especially the S7-1200 family. It's seven steps. After you've done it twice, it takes about 15 minutes.
If someone asks me to order “a 1214C,” I don't call the distributor first. I go to Siemens' product documentation. The S7-1200 platform has been updated multiple times; the “1214C” installed in 2018 isn't necessarily the same order number or firmware version as the current one. That matters more than it sounds, because the person writing the program needs to know the firmware before they commit.
Search Siemens Industry Online Support for “siemens s7-1200 plc datasheet,” or pull the SIMATIC S7-1200 system manual. As of May 2025, the system manual is available under document ID 36932465 on Siemens' support portal. I download the PDF, highlight the order number, and attach it to the internal request.
The nickname approach costs money. “S7-1200 CPU 1214C DC/DC/Rly” sounds specific, but there's also an AC/DC/Rly version. I ordered the relay output model once when the engineer needed DC outputs. The panel builder caught it, but only after I'd logged the part into inventory and the supplier's return window was getting tight.
Now I write the full Siemens order number on every line item. The 1214C DC/DC/Rly is 6ES7214-1HG40-0XB0; the AC/DC/Rly version is 6ES7214-1BG40-0XB0. If the internal request doesn't include a full number, I send it back. That one habit eliminated most of my ordering mistakes.
Don't let brand debates distract you. Search “PLC market share 2025 Siemens vs Rockwell” and you'll see the same broad context repeated: Siemens leads globally, while Rockwell has a strong North American base. That's useful background. It shouldn't drive a replacement order.
The practical question is simpler. If you're replacing an existing Siemens PLC, order the current equivalent and note the firmware version. If this is a brand-new control panel, leave the platform decision to engineering. When finance asks why the Siemens price is higher than another brand, I answer with our installed base and life-cycle expectations, not with a market share graph.
A PLC is rarely the only thing you'll need for a motor cabinet. And another thing people forget: the contactor supply is a separate order line. It doesn't show up automatically with the PLC. In one project, the spare parts list just said “contactor supply”—no coil voltage, no frame size, no auxiliary contact count. The engineer assumed the distributor would know the application. The distributor assumed the engineer had provided specs. We had the PLC, but we waited another ten days for the contactor order to be corrected.
If I see “contactor supply” on a BOM, I now confirm at minimum:
Two minutes of that is cheaper than a rushed shipment.
A new PLC doesn't help much if the control panel loses memory backup a week after installation. Dead batteries don't usually cause catastrophic failure; they cause annoying, after-hours service calls. I learned that the hard way when a startup got pushed to a Friday afternoon and the backup battery in the cabinet was flat.
Now I ask about the power side whenever a Siemens PLC order is linked to a panel modification: is there a UPS, a separate 24 V DC power supply, or a battery-backed real-time clock? Our service bench also keeps a Pro Logix battery charger with a maintainer mode so spare 12 V backup batteries stay healthy while they wait on a shelf. The battery charger isn't part of the Siemens part number, but it prevents a preventable delay.
In March 2023, our regular distributor showed stock and promised three-day delivery for an S7-1200 CPU. Four days went by, then came the call: “actually, it's coming from another warehouse.” Then no tracking number. I eventually got a refund, but the job lost a week.
Since then I keep a second distributor pre-qualified: tax ID, credit terms, contact person, order portal access. The markup on a rush order from the backup vendor is far less than the cost of a project sitting idle.
Five minutes of inspection beats five days of correction. I compare the Siemens label on each box to the purchase order and the datasheet PDF from Step 1.
If anything doesn't match, I photograph it and email the vendor the same afternoon. Returning a PLC after it has sat in inventory for two weeks looks careless. Catching it on the day of arrival is good process.
Then I file the delivery note with the invoice. A vendor who couldn't provide a proper invoice once forced me to eat a $2,400 order out of our department budget. Now I treat paperwork as part of the product.
This works for a mid-size automation company with steady purchasing patterns. If you're buying for a 24/7 plant, a large OEM, or a safety-instrumented system, add formal life-cycle management and involve a controls engineer before you order.
Also remember the mechanical side. If the complaint is “the PLC won't start a pump,” check the pump itself before you replace the controller. I once saw an S7-1200 service request that was really a fuel pump that had lost prime. If someone asks you how do you prime a fuel pump, that's a maintenance question, not a Siemens part number question. Have the mechanic bleed the fuel system while an electrician confirms the PLC output is actually closing. That one check saved us a $1,200 CPU that we didn't need.
The satisfying part of this process is that delivery days become boring. No urgent phone calls, no “we'll deal with the part number later,” no accounting surprises. Boring is the goal.
